Recommendations Report SAMEN: Moving Forward
Migrants fleeing conflict or persecution face heightened risks of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) before, during and after their journey. Despite the significant health impacts, including elevated rates of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and depression, few migrants access support services due to mistrust and systemic barriers. The SAMEN project (2022–2024), implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Médecins du Monde Netherlands (MdM), addresses this gap by raising awareness and connecting migrant survivors in the Netherlands to essential support services. By fostering trust, improving communication, and enhancing access to services, the project sets a precedent for addressing complex challenges and ensuring comprehensive support for migrant survivors of SGBV.
This report consolidates insights from consultations with over 900 stakeholders in the Netherlands, including migrants, professionals, and cultural mediators, to strengthen SGBV responses. The SAMEN project highlights the importance of collaborative, culturally sensitive approaches and the engagement of cultural mediators to effectively address SGBV risks. The recommendations are tailored to various stakeholders: migrant organizations and cultural mediators, the service sector, municipalities and the Dutch national government.
