Join IOM at CoP29 Side Event on Human Trafficking in the Context of Climate Mobility

IOM, CoP29 side event flyer

In collaboration with Anti-Slavery International, the Interagency Coordination Group Against Trafficking in Persons (ICAT), and the Alliance 8.7 Migration Action Group, IOM will participate in the 29th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP 29). Together, these organizations will co-host the side event Human Trafficking in the Context of Climate Mobility: Evidence and Solutions for Addressing the Nexus.

This side event will raise awareness on the links between climate change, environmental degradation, displacement, and the increased risk of human trafficking, including forced labor and child labor. Through case studies and practical solutions, the event will focus on building resilience and protecting vulnerable groups, such as migrants, while supporting the Paris Agreement and a just transition to greener economies. Addressing these connections is essential for safeguarding the rights of all affected communities, including migrants, and ensuring that no one is left behind in climate action.

This event will be an opportunity for governments, UN agencies, international organizations, businesses, trade unions, and civil society to engage in dialogue, share evidence, and promote collective efforts to counter human trafficking risks in the context of environmental migration.

Key Objectives:
  • Enhance awareness on human trafficking risks associated with climate change.
  • Reflect on available evidence on the topic and showcase examples from the field on this nexus, in diverse contexts.
  • Discuss solutions for enhancing resilience and reducing vulnerabilities across affected communities.
