A webinar discussion on "Preparing the reintegration process prior to return: the FORAS project experience in Morocco" has been organized by the EU-IOM Knowledge Management Hub (KMH) on Thursday, 23 July 2020 (visit here the recording of the webinar).

The webinar, conducted in French, provided an overview of how pre-departure assistance in Morocco delivered in the framework of the FORAS project contributes to the sustainable reintegration of returnees in their countries of origin.

FORAS, meaning “opportunities” in Arabic, is a project funded by the German Federal Foreign Office and implemented by IOM in Morocco. FORAS provides migrants willing to return to target countries of origin with up-to-date information about opportunities and challenges associated with the reintegration process in these countries as well as various pre-departure training courses addressing the economic, social and psychosocial dimensions of reintegration.

During the webinar the speakers shared lessons learnt, key findings and practical experience from the project implementation.

  • Ms. Leila Ouchani (Head of Economic Integration Division, Directorate of Migration Affairs, Ministry Delegate to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad, Responsible for Moroccans Living Abroad) , analyzed the importance of the pre-departure assistance and described lessons learned in Morocco from a government perspective.

  • Mr. Jorge Dominguez de la Escosura (FORAS Project Manager, IOM Morocco) presented the experience and the good practices from the first phase of the FORAS project.

  • Mr. Akram Abu Karaki (Head of Operations and AVRR unit, IOM Guinea) analyzed the perspective of the country of origin, the experience of returnees in Guinea and the impact of pre-departure assistance on sustainable reintegration.

The presentations were followed by an interactive Q&A session.
