Stories of Return and Reintegration
Somalia lies at the centre of old migration routes dating back centuries, and now used by scores of mainly young people, including minors, on their way to the Gulf countries. The country is a key source, transit and, to some extent, destination location for irregular migratory flows due to its porous borders, including Africa’s longest coastline. From March 2017, the EU-IOM Joint Initiative for Migrant Protection and Reintegration in the Horn of Africa has stood in support of migrants wishing to return but lacking the means to do so. This booklet tells the stories of migrants transiting through, living in or returning to Somalia. Each of these individuals of diverse age, origin and background made the decision to leave their homes in search of a better future. The narration of their journeys offers a glimpse into the multi-faceted realities migrants face – struggles, dreams, hopes, disappointments, achievements and successes. They serve to tell us about the past as much as they are a projection into a hopeful future. |
