Introducing the Migration Youth and Children Platform

Introducing the Migration Youth and Children Platform @IOM and MYCP

In celebration of International Youth Day on August 12 and to recognize IOM's efforts on behalf of children, youth, and families, the Migrant Protection Platform wishes to highlight the work of one of its partners.

The need for unified actions and readily available information is key and the Migrant Protection Platform encourages collaborations with various stakeholders, paving the way for cooperative efforts across all the protection areas.

Established in 2017, the Migration Youth and Children Platform (MYCP) was created by young people, for young people, to influence the highest levels of international migration policymaking, to give a voice to youth who have experienced migration first hand, and to impact the highest levels of international migration policymaking.

MYCP is part of the Major Group for Children and Youth (MGCY) – the official, formal and self-organized space for children and youth (aged below 30) to contribute to and engage in certain intergovernmental and allied policy processes at the UN since 1992.

MYCP’s mission is to bridge children and youth and the UN system, focusing on migration issues, to ensure that their right to meaningful participation is realized. By facilitating active participation of youth in intergovernmental processes, it ensures that the voices of youth are heard and conveyed through young representatives and then implemented.

MYCP has a global reach and works across the thematic areas of health, protection, climate mobility, local governance, data, gender, and education. This is being achieved by engaging with children and youth entities in (in) formal approaches in the design, implementation, monitoring, follow-up and review of sustainable development policies at all levels in four areas:

  • Policy & advocacy: facilitating the collective participation of young people in official, formal and informal avenues of policy design and implementation
  • Capacity building: introducing activities for young people to enhance their understanding and skills related to migration.
  • Knowledge: sharing innovative and effective practices and actions addressing the needs of migrants and host communities.
  • Action: providing youth with a platform for dialogue, identification of emerging issues, dissemination and taking the initiative.

MYCP engages with governments, civil society, private sector, mayors and actively participates in official processes that shape global debate on migration including the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) and the Global Compact for Migration (GCM).
