This research study addresses the complex issue of human trafficking on the island of Ireland, focusing on the unique challenges posed by the "open" land border between Ireland and Northern Ireland. It highlights particular concerns about trafficking movements from south to north, shaped by the post-conflict context and distinct legal jurisdictions. Despite growing awareness of human trafficking in the region, there has been limited research on this issue, leaving gaps in understanding the evidence, trends, and responses.

The study investigates four key questions: the evidence of human trafficking on the island, profiles of victims and their exploitation, the impact of jurisdictional divides on policing and information sharing, and the processes for victim identification and support. Conducted primarily through qualitative methods, the research draws insights from in-depth interviews with 23 key informants from 18 organizations directly or indirectly involved in combating human trafficking in both Ireland and Northern Ireland. This exploration offers critical perspectives on the cross-border dynamics of trafficking and the responses of both jurisdictions.
